Recently Released: Health United States 2009

The National Center for Health Statistics recently released Health United States 2009, the authoritative collection of data on the health of Americans. You can access the book electronically here. There are loads of interesting tables and charts that paint an often surprising picture–surprising in the sense that things are often worse than you might think. When people claim that we have the best health care system in the world they ought to look at our health. Sure, the health care system isn’t the sole or even the primary determinant of health status, but it is supposed to keep us as healthy as possible. So, look over the numbers and see where we’re doing a good job and where we need to try harder. And, hey, it never hurts to throw these statistics around when you’re making an argument.
