Paul Starr has an excellent commentary on why health reform advocates should be willing to let the public option fall away from the table. He’s not saying “Forget it.” He’s saying “Forget it for the time being.” There’s a big difference. As he does an excellent job of arguing, fighting for the public option now could doom health reform entirely. Getting some kind of health reform through, on the other hand, leaves the door open to re-introduce the public option later. I don’t know how comfortable I am with that, but it’s hard to argue with Paul Starr.
